I used to teach high school physics. For about a decade, my classroom was a daily experiment in curiosity, confusion, and the occasional heroic comeback from a pop quiz. My favorite moments were always the same: the instant a student’s face changed from “this is impossible” to “oh, I get it.” That little spark, the aha! flash, is basically my favorite force of nature. It’s also why I now write about science full-time.

From teaching to writing

I earned a B.S. in Physics because I love how the universe follows rules you can test. Then I became a teacher because I love watching people discover they can understand those rules, even if they were told they are “not a science person.”

Teaching also gave me a front-row seat to a truth that doesn’t show up in textbooks: complexity is not the enemy. Unfriendly explanations are. A lot of science writing fails not because the ideas are too hard, but because nobody built the bridge between the lab and daily life.

At Empiric Folio, I try to build that bridge with sturdy planks: clear language, honest context, and just enough metaphor to make the story stick. Think of it like translating. The goal is not to dumb things down. The goal is to open things up.

My mission is to make that understanding feel accessible and empowering, not intimidating. I’m an optimist about science, but not a blind one.
